Better Mobile Service and Internet: А1 and MTS Finish Implementing RAN Sharing Technology
А1 and MTS have taken their networks to a new level nationwide by implementing the RAN Sharing technology. The project allowed to significantly enhance the quality of mobile service and speed up Internet connection across all regions of Belarus.
The RAN Sharing technology allows to increase 3G coverage and quality without setting up new base stations. The technology involves the joint use of radio access networks by several mobile service providers. As a result, the full cycle of rolling out new capacities is reduced from several years to several months. On top of that, reduced amount of equipment in use and lower energy consumption result in less carbon emissions.
Following the third stage, the two mobile service providers are expected to launch 180 new base station sectors using the MTS infrastructure. The companies opted for a 900MHz frequency band, which ensures a wider coverage and higher throughput. This allows to achieve a better mobile service in areas with complex landscapes and settlements surrounded by woods.
The implementation of the RAN Sharing technology started in 2022 and is ongoing. Following the three stages of project implementation, the quality of mobile service has been improved in more than 2,000 settlements across Belarus. A1 and MTS will continue with the project in 2025.
