A1 counted how many times the Belarusians called the birds

Let us recall that in May 2020 ten birds received their own telephone numbers. It turned out that the Belarusians called the birds more than 180 thousand times within 9 months. Most often they wanted to hear the warble of a nightingale, while wrens were the least popular birds. This winter, bullfinches were also noted not only in photos on Instagram but also in the list of calls of the Belarusians.

A1 launched the "Make Contact With Nature" («Выйдзi на сувязь з прыродай») project in cooperation with the "Protection of the Birds of the Fatherland" («Ахова птушак Бацькаўшчыны») public organization and the "Creaton" («Креатон») volunteer initiative. Belarus became the only country in the world where the birds have their own telephone numbers. To hear the voice of the ten most popular birds in Belarus, you just need to call the telephone number.

In total, from May through February, the Belarusian birds were called 183,285 times. The nightingale was the most popular bird – it was called approximately 37 thousand times. The people were also curious about how the gray tawny owl "speaks" – apparently, not everyone knows what kind of bird it is – and called it 26 thousand times. The blackbird, a forest dweller, gathered about 20 thousand calls thus making the top three.

Not only the Belarusians liked this idea. The news circled round the world via social media, while in TikTok even the "Call Your Cuckoo" challenge appeared. Over the first months of work, people from the Ukraine, Russia, Sweden, the United States and other countries wanted to hear the Belarusian birds.

The telephone numbers operate on an ongoing basis. And even today, you can call your favorite bird to hear its voice, for example, a bullfinch, because these birds can be especially often seen in cities and towns.
